Product works after dabbling with it- Video capture and edit SW is not for the faint hearted! Review by Hamdi El-Sissi

I read all the negative reviews of this product with listed issues. Guess what, I got everyone of these problems! The fundamental problem with the product is there is no user's manual that gives you guidance to deal what seem to be common problems that everyone faces. The manual that was shipped with the product is a skimpy installation manual! If you are not patient or have sufficient dexterity, this product will be difficult for you. At any rate, here are the listed problems (I have seen each on!) and the recommended action: 1-"Device busy or not available": This does not happen all the time but the fix is as follows. Unplug the USB converter, push refresh button and it will display the computer built in camera output. Now plug the device back, push refresh and select the capture device 2-" Material is copyrighted": It appears in some tapes sometime more than once. Stop capture when the message appears and restart again. At the end of capturing all the tape segments (this problem may occur more than once in one tape), merge all the files in one using MPG-2 (default capture compression) 3- No Audio: Must select the incomprehensible selection "Audio Pin Source" whatever that means 4- No Video: Must select the appropriate video standard under "Device Setting". In North America it is NTSC-M-J. The real work occurs after capture to merge (project), convert into the appropriate standards and produce (DVD, etc. The "raw" files are huge MPEG-2 high quality (1.2 MB/s, almost 4-5 GB per hour). I am still experimenting with the compression choices but it appears that WMV (Microsoft video compressor) may be the most efficient. (Posted on 26/02/2013)

It's a really small package for a great price. I had a lot of tapes to transfer over but didn't have the capturing device to do it and this did the job. You just plug it right in to the camera with your camera cables and into the computer it goes! Start capturing right away! Great shipping too! (Posted on 11/01/2013)
Works great (once you figure it out) Review by RA

I initially could not get the video to frame-grab and could not find any documentation (no manufacturer website). The manual is not meant for troubleshooting. Finally figured out that needed to set configuration for NTSC and after that it has worked really well. The quality of the digitized files is excellent. (Posted on 09/01/2013)
Terrible software Review by Josh Gross

I installed the software on multiple computers. I continually received the same error message: "The Device is not available, or being used by another application." Finally, I used this program instead, and got it to work. [...] Additionally, the customer service number included in the manual is disconnected. Very annoying. (Posted on 01/01/2013)
Capture function does not work reliably. Review by D. R.

My experience overall was negative. I don't know if the capture device works or not, it never worked reliably. I installed the drivers/software (Windows 7, 64-bit) and the editing function seems decent. However, when switching to the "capture" tab of the software, the error "device not available or in use" pops up and there is no way around it. I contacted August customer service and their advice was to re-install. I had re-installed prior to contacting them, looked for updates and downloaded the latest software/drivers from their site. I even did a system restore on my computer just to be sure there was no lingering bugs from the first installation. It did seem to work once, but if I closed the program and tried again, that error occurred. I'm sure there is a way to fix this, but I tried everything I can think of and August's customer service is worse than calling my grandma for computer advice. I received this item on 12/20 and as of 12/30 (today) there was no fix. (Posted on 29/12/2012)
What a treasure Review by Thomas W. Bolander

I have used numerous types of products to transfer video to computers, including a number of different and expensive ati video boards, and a not at all expensive EasyCap DC60, but irregardless of price, they could all be extremely difficult to set up within my desired viewing and capturing software; until I took a chance and purchased the August VGB100 on Amazon. As usual, it arrive very quickly, (prior to the estimated date), but even more gratifying, it was also an extremely welcomed snap to configure and the quality was on equal par to the expensive video cards and though slight, it is sharper and cleaner than the EasyCap, so pay $300.00 or $10.00 or whatever you want, but for twice the price, you will not find a capture device better or more user friendly than the VGB100. I'm going to buy another one just in case they decide to raise the price to equal its value. My extensive experience demands that I highly recommend the VGB100, which I wholeheartedly do. I wanted to digitize some old camcorder footage and when I saw the price of this one, I thought why not. It was so easy to install and I now have some brilliant videos from years ago. Thanks! (Posted on 11/10/2012)

If you buy this expecting it to do the job of a high end capture card you are going to have a bad time. This is however a great product that does it's job well. It installed without issue (on windows 7) and captures decent quality video (think 480p-ish). If that's what you are looking for give it a shot. (Posted on 26/07/2012)
