Connecting A Portable DVD Player to a TV

With the release of the TV DVD combo DA383, we are keen to dive in to the adaptability and connections you can benefit from with a portable DVD player!

Quickly identify if you can connect a portable DVD player to a TV with the below steps:

Step 1: Identify TV Inputs

When connecting devices, be it a Bluetooth network or a physical media solution like a DVD player, inputs and outputs are the key to getting it right and connecting stress-free.

You'll need to look over your TV's user manual or simply look at the back and sides of the TV itself to identify which audio and video inputs the TV has. Luckily, TVs are built for inputs and so the vast majority of ports you find will be inputs.

These ports allow media to be input to the TV, which can display it. That's why it's so vital to identify your available inputs when connecting a device.

Your ports will most likely include:

  • At least 1 HDMI port, which is an audio-visual port
  • Up to 1 SCART or RCA port, which are separate audio and video ports which combine into one
  • AUX Ports, which are audio-only ports which can be used for input or output
  • Optical Audio ports, which are mainly for soundbars
  • Coaxial Aerial ports, which provide Live TV services

Step 2: Identify DVD Player Outputs

Once you know what inputs your TV has, you need to double-check which ones the DVD player can connect to.

For example, if your auto DVD player has an HDMI output port then you can use an HDMI cable to connect it to an HDMI input port on your TV!

Similarly, if your DVD player has the red, white and yellow cables of RCA / SCART then you can connect it to the TV's RCA / SCART input.

Can a portable dvd player be connected to a TV?

So long as your cables and ports are all lined up, and they run from an output to an input, then you're good to get watching all your fave DVDs on the TV!

Step 3: Set the Correct Source / Input

Once you're plugged in, the TV might not always display the DVD. If this happens, you need to make sure the TV is actually set to the right input or "source". If you plug the DVD player into an HDMI port and the TV is still set to SCART, it won't show the DVD!

Use your TV manual and navigate your menu on the TV remote to change the source or input to whichever port you used to connect the DVD player.

Once properly chosen, the TV will display your DVD player.

For Out and About, Use a Combo!

Setting up a DVD player like this is great for holidays or temporary accommodation, but what if you're really out in the sticks camping or on a road trip and can't guarantee access to a TV? A portable player isn't much good without a screen!

This is where a TV DVD combo is fantastic, and provides an inbuilt DVD player an TV combination to watch your DVDs anywhere you like, without having to set it all up or bring a mess of cables!
